Stella’s man-overboard rescue
Kensuke's KingdomStella’s man-overboard rescue is a crisis during the family’s round-the-world voyage aboard the Peggy Sue, and a test of the crew’s preparation under pressure. When Stella falls into the Indian Ocean, Michael, his mother, and his father must turn their rehearsed drill into a real recovery; after three unsuccessful approaches, they bring her aboard and make a stricter safety rule for the rest of the voyage.
Circumstances
By February 7, the family is hundreds of miles out in the Indian Ocean. Stella rarely comes up on deck except in calm conditions, but on this occasion she appears at the bow while the boat is pitching and rolling. Michael is taking bearings with a sextant, his mother is at the wheel, and his father is below in the galley. Stella disappears overboard almost as soon as Michael notices her.
The danger is heightened by the distance from land and the moving sea, but the family has prepared for precisely this emergency. Before the voyage, they practiced the man-overboard drill dozens of times in the Solent with Barnacle Bill. The drill gives them a sequence to follow when a sudden accident might otherwise leave them scrambling: shout and point, turn into the wind, lower the sails, and start the engine.
The Rescue
Michael immediately points and keeps shouting to mark Stella’s position. His father lowers the mainsail and jib, and the Peggy Sue turns back toward her. Michael’s mother tries to bring the boat alongside as slowly and closely as possible. His father reaches over the side without wearing his safety harness, however, and a wave carries Stella away just as they approach.
The family turns back for another attempt, but the first three approaches fail: the boat passes too quickly or Stella remains beyond reach. As she grows weaker, the rescue becomes increasingly urgent. On the final approach, the Peggy Sue comes close enough for Michael’s father to grab her. The three family members haul Stella aboard by her collar and tail.
Aftermath and Safety Rule
The successful recovery brings immediate relief, but it also exposes a lapse in the family’s own safety practice. Michael’s father praises him for helping; Michael’s mother then gives his father a strong lecture for reaching overboard without his safety harness. His response is to put his arms around her as she cries. Stella, meanwhile, shakes herself and goes below as though nothing has happened.
Michael’s mother establishes a strict rule afterward: Stella must never go out on deck, in any weather, without a safety harness clipped on, like the other members of the crew. Michael’s father is to make one for her. The episode thus turns the family’s successful drill into a lasting change in how they manage risk aboard the boat: training helps them recover Stella, while the near miss prompts a new precaution.
